Maintenance of hearing aids
Your hearing instruments have to withstand with moisture and heat, earwax, skin flakes, oil and hair care products. Here are some practical tips that will help to keep them functioning properly.
- Always keep your hearing instruments clean and dry.
- To preserve battery life when you’re not wearing your instruments, open the battery compartment door so the battery is not in contact with the internal components.
- Make a habit of cleaning your hearing instruments on a daily basis.
- Never use household cleaning fluids or oil to clean your instrument.
- At night, store your hearing instruments in a hearing instrument drying kit (available from your hearing care professional).
- Always check to make sure you’ve removed your instruments before swimming, showering or applying hairspray. It’s a good idea to check your pockets before washing clothes as well.
Ear wax
Every hearing aid has a wax filter that will prevent ear wax from plugging up the component of the hearing aid which delivers the sound to your ear. Keep this filter as clean as possible and change it whenever you can no longer clean it.
Every Beltone hearing aid comes with a brush and cloth. Use the brush to clean the wax filter. And use the cloth to clean the remaining surfaces of the hearing aid.
Moisture
As you wear your hearing aids during the day, moisture may build up inside the hearing aid. To prolong the life of the hearing aid, Beltone recommends that you leave the battery door open at night while not wearing the hearing aid to allow the internal components to dry.
